How to upgrade Zimbra Talk to the latest Release

Zimbra Talk specializes in providing services for real time communication and it includes several components. In minimal installation a Zimbra environment and a single additional server (the Talk server) are required. At the moment the only supported platform for the Talk Server is Ubuntu 14.04 (64bit), Red Hat Support is expect for the next Release

Zimbra Talk needs as well a Zimbra Collaboration 8.6 or higher version"

The Zimbra Talk system enables its users to perform text chat, text conference, video chat & video conference as well as online document collaboration between the participants of a Zimbra Talk session, using Zimbra Zimlet technology.

Upgrade Zimbra Talk to the latest Release

Zimbra Talk packages are been updating every week, in order to have your Zimbra Talk upgraded to the latest Release, please follow this instructions:

Backup important configuration files

Login to to the talk-server and backup your config files to you home directory:

cd ~
mkdir configbackup
cd configbackup
sudo cp -rp /etc/jitsi /etc/nginx /etc/prosody /etc/zimbra-talk ./

Update your system on Zimbra Talk Server

Now you can run the next commands to update and upgrade the Zimbra Talk Packages

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Reboot the Zimbra Talk Server

Reboot the talk-server

sudo reboot

Upgrade the Zimbra Talk Zimlet on the Zimbra Collaboration server

Check if the current stable repository is setup correctly for zmpkg:

$ sudo su - zimbra
$ cat /opt/zimbra/extensions-extra/zmpkg/etc/apt/sources.list
## automatic entry generated by bootstrap install
## NOTE: you should retain formatting (spaces instead of tabs)
## for further automatic config upgrades to work
deb judaspriest free restricted commercial
## add your own repos below

Uncomment every other repository than

deb judaspriest free restricted commercial

Now check for updates of the Zimlet and upgrade it in case there is a new version available by executing:

zm-apt-get update
zm-apt-get upgrade

In case a new version of the Zimlet has been found and installed, the mailbox-server has to be restarted and the caches flushed:

zmmailboxdctl restart
zmprov fc all

Note: On a multi-server environment, the Zimlet must be upgraded this way on every mailbox-server.

Now you are running the latest Zimbra Talk version.

How to upgrade to stable release coming from the Technical Preview repository

If you helped us to test the Technical Preview, first of all thank you so much for your support and help with it. In order for you to migrate from the Technical Preview

Zimbra Collaboration Server

To move from the technical preview repositories to the stable ones, you should download the script from here into your Zimbra Collaboration Server

mv /tmp/
chmod +x
chmod 777 /tmp/

Login now as zimbra user and run the script:

su - zimbra
cd /tmp


After a few seconds, you will have the proper repositories on your system, and you need to update and upgrade your Zimbra Talk Zimlet

zm-apt-get update
zm-apt-get upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree       
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
The following packages will be upgraded:
1 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 10.9 MB of archives.
After this operation, 0 B of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n] y

To finish the operations, you should restart the mailbox service

zmmailboxdctl restart

To move from the technical preview repositories to the stable ones, you should download the script from here into your Zimbra Talk Server

chmod +x


The process will then fix the repositories on the Zimbra Talk Server, run the update and upgrade to obtain the latest release:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

When the process finish, do a complete restart of the Zimbra Talk Server, and you will have now the latest stable release of Zimbra Talk on both, on the Zimbra Collaboration side and on the Zimbra Talk Server
