A Zimbra server upgrade sometimes includes data structure changes to the sync state metadata.  For example, the upgrade from 4.0.5 to 4.5 happens to include such a change.  In such cases after the upgrade the devices that were in sync with server may experience errors on the next sync transaction.  This is because when the server detects that a client's state is no longer compatible with server metadata, a special reset code is sent back to the client.  However the speical reset code is handled in different ways on different devices.

On a Windows Mobile device, such as Treo 700w and MOTO Q, the phone display the following error message: "A critical error has occurred.  ActiveSync can recover from this error, but the next time you synchronize, you may lose changes made since your last successful synchronization". The user can click OK and proceed to sync again. This "critical error" message may appear a couple of times depending on what's being sync'ed.  Simply click "OK" and click "Sync" button again on error prompt.  After a couple of trials the client will reset its state and automatically start a full resync, which will bring the client to be in sync with server.

The VersaMail 3.5 client on Palm devices, such as Treo 650 (with upgrade) or Treo 700p, has somewhat similar behavior.  Upon receiving the reset code from the server, VersaMail displays an error message saying "There was a problem syncing messages".  If you dismiss that error message and click "Sync" again, you will see an alert message like this: "There was a problem syncing with the Exchange ActiveSync server.  Your next sync will take a little longer than usual.  Do you want to sync now?"  If you click Yes then the full resync will start.  The alert message may appear more than once depending on what's being sync'ed.

Note that VersaMail clients older than the latest 3.5 do not support the reset code. In that case the user only sees the error message but is not given the choice of a resync. To force a manual reset and resync, the user needs to update the sync profile as a workaround. To update the sync profile, launch VersaMail and click on the pull down menu of "Account Setup". Select the Exchange sync account and click "Edit...".  Change the username to anything and save. When you click "Done", the client will ask "Are you sure you want to overwrite the existing settings for the XXX account?"  Click "Yes".  You will see an alert message.  Click "No" to dismiss the alert.  Now edit the sync profile again to revert the username change you did earlier in order to force a reset.  When you are done, this time click "Yes" on the alert message to start a full resync.  Depending on your version of VersaMail, the error messages and alert messages you see may vary, but the general process is the same.

This article contains an overview of mobility options for Zimbra Collaboration Suite (ZCS), as well as information on how to set up Zimbra Mobile for most smartphones on specific operating systems. Zimbra Mobile Overview

Zimbra offers four options for accessing Zimbra accounts using mobile devices.

  • Zimbra Mobile Web Client. The first option, the Zimbra Mobile Web Client, is the most versatile option since it can be accessed on almost any mobile device and requires no license or additional software. Using the Zimbra Mobile Web Client, users can access their mail, contacts, calendar, and briefcase.
  • Zimbra Mobile Touch Client. A Network Edition Feature. The secure, HTML5 mobile web application provides a device-specific user experience for Android and iOS devices. Accessing ZCS using Zimbra Mobile Web Client

All devices with an HTML-compatible browser can access Zimbra email, contacts, calendar, and briefcase using the Zimbra Mobile Web Client.

To use the Zimbra Mobile Web Client, open the HTML-compatible browser on your phone and type in the URL of your Zimbra Server with a /m/ at the end of the URL. For example:

Using Zimbra Mobile with iPhones

Entering Zimbra Mobile settings on your iPhone (or iPad/iTouch) will sync your email, contacts and calendars using your carrier's data plan. Note, in order to use this feature you need to be 1) using a Zimbra paid Network Edition account and 2) your administrator must have mobility enabled.

IMPORTANT:

Performing these steps can delete all of the existing contacts on your iPhone. This is a common problem for iPhone users when creating a new ActiveSync account. You should ensure that you have backed up all of your contacts before proceeding.

SET UP:

First click on the "Settings" icon (the gears) and scroll down and select "Mail, Contacts, Calendars." On the next screen you will see and select "Add Account." Choose "Microsoft Exchange"

Next you will need to enter your account information:

  • Email. This is your company email address (eg joe@puppies.net)
  • Password. This is your Zimbra password (the same on used for the Zimbra Web Client)
  • Description. A description for your Account

CONFIGURATION OPTIONS:

Once you have successfully set up your account, you should begin to see mail folders contacts and your calendar(s) appear on the device. After, you may choose to edit either global or account-specific settings.

Global settings available affect all your email accounts and is located in Settings / Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Here you can set usability controls such as number of messages, previews, font size and more.

Within this screen you may also select your Zimbra Account and then select "Account Info" to adjust whether you want any of the syncing options changed, how many days of email and which folders you want pushed.

Configuring Zimbra Mobile on Android SmartPhones

Select the option for Advanced Setup.

Enter your full email address and password for your account. Then press the sign in button.

Select Exchange ActiveSync.

Ensure your email address remains correct. Leave the Domain field blank. Enter the following address for Server: connect.emailsrvr.com.

Select the sign in button. Once connected, you will see a new icon within your settings menu with the name of your new email account.

Accesing ZCS using a modern BlackBerry device

Latest BlackBerry models support ActiveSync, you can find more information here or just follow this steps to configure your BlackBerry using ActiveSync:

  • On the home screen, swipe down from the top bezel and select Settings.
  • Select Accounts > Add Account > Email, Calendar and Contacts
  • Enter the email address in the Email Address field and click Next.
  • Enter the account password on next screen and click Next.
  • The BlackBerry smartphone autodiscover client will attempt to use the autodiscover service of the Zimbra Server to get all of the requisite server and synchronization settings.

If the autodiscover service is not accessible or autodiscover response is not understood by smartphone, use the advanced setup as described to complete the setup:

  • On the home screen, swipe down from the top bezel and select Settings.
  • Select Accounts > Add Account > Advanced > Microsoft Exchange Active Sync
  • Enter the username used to log into Zimbra Web Client in the Username field.
  • Enter the email address in the Email Address field.
  • Enter the password used to log into Zimbra Web Client in the Password field.
  • Enter the URL used to log into Zimbra Web Client in the Server Address field.
  • Enter the appropriate port number in the Port field.

If these settings do not work, contact the email administrator for the correct account information.
