Introduction: Zimbra and iPhone

The Apple iPhone can be used to access Zimbra Collaboration Suite using IMAP/POP3, Safari, and iSync. It can also access Zimbra Collaboration Suite with Exchange, using the IMAP protocol for retrieving mail. It can also access ZCS using OTA (Over The Air) syncing. Unlike Apple Mail 2.1.1 on OS X and ActiveSync 5+ on Windows Mobile Phones, the iPhone will accept multiple Exchange accounts that can be used with the Zimbra Collaboration Suite server.

Zimbra Collaboration Suite has connectors for Windows and Macintosh that will allow your iPhone to sync to the Zimbra server via local applications. Both connectors interact with Apple's iTunes; you must have iTunes installed to be able to sync.

IMAP, POP, or Exchange Settings

Using IMAP, POP, or Exchange does not require any type of Zimbra connector. It is important to note that using these settings only will not sync Contacts or Calendars, only mail messages.

Note: The iPhone (as of update 1.1.1) does not support IMAP IDLE.
  1. Under Mail settings, select "Add Account..."
  2. Select "Other"
  3. Select "IMAP", "POP3", or "Exchange"
  4. Fill in the "Name", "Address", and "Description" fields
  5. Provide "Host Name", "User Name", and "Password" in the "Incoming Mail Server" section. The iPhone will automatically detect IMAP over SSL if your server requires it. If your server requires a non-default TCP port specification, use the hostname:port format in the "Host Name" field. SSL settings can be adjusted later under the "Advanced" section in the mail account settings.
  6. In the "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" section, provide settings for "Host Name", "User Name" and "Password". As with the incoming mail server, the "Host Name" setting accepts the hostname:port format if the outgoing mail server uses a non-default TCP port.
  7. Save the configuration

Sub-Folders: Setting the IMAP Path Prefix to "INBOX" allows for the browsing of folders child folders of "Inbox", but peer folders such as Sent, Drafts, Trash, and Junk folders are not displayed.

Using the iPhone with iSync (Macintosh)

The iPhone does not allow "over the air" sync like other mobile devices. You must sync the phone through iTunes.

You can use the Zimbra Collaboration Suite Connector for Apple iSync to synchronize your contact and calendar information between your iPhone and Zimbra Collaboration Suite. For more information about the Zimbra Collaboration Suite Connector for Apple iSync, refer to the Zimbra Collaboration Suite Connector for Apple iSync Guide.

If you do not use the Zimbra Collaboration Suite Connector for Apple iSync, you may only complete a partial sync. While your Macintosh and iPhone will be fully updated, the Zimbra server will not sync anything except email, if you have it set up. In order to fully sync your iCal and Address Book to the Zimbra server, you must use the Zimbra Collaboration Suite Connector for iSync.

The iSync connector is only included in Network Edition products. It can be acquired in the Zimbra Administration Server console.

Using the iPhone with the Connector for Outlook (Windows)

You can use the Zimbra Collaboration Suite Connector for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 SP1+ to synchronize your contact and calendar information between your iPhone and Zimbra Collaboration Suite. For more information about the Zimbra Collaboration Suite Connector for Microsoft Outlook, refer to the Zimbra Collaboration Suite Connector for Microsoft Outlook guide.

Your Zimbra profile in Microsoft Outlook must be the default profile. Otherwise, iTunes will only sync the default profile to the iPhone. For more information on setting your default profile, click here.

If you do not use the Zimbra Collaboration Suite Connector for Microsoft Outlook, you may only complete a partial sync. While Microsoft Outlook and iPhone will be fully updated, the Zimbra server will not sync anything except email, if you have it set up. In order to fully sync, you must use the Zimbra Collaboration Suite Connector for Microsoft Outlook.

As with Apple's iSync, e-mail is not synced; however, your calendar, and contacts will be synced.

Using "iZimbra" to View Mail

Zimbra Collaboration Suite 5.0(Beta 3+) contains a webclient built for mobile devices such as the iPhone. By using this client, users get the experience of using the iPhone while viewing mail on the Zimbra server.

To use "iZimbra", simply point Safari to your mail login page (http(s)://mail.server.com/). Once you enter your username and password, the server wil redirect you to the "iZimbra" client.

Using the iPhone with Linux

The iPhone uses iTunes to sync all information. Apple has not developed a version of iTunes for Linux, thus syncing is not possible.

Using the Standard Client to View Mail

Currently, the Zimbra AJAX client does not work on Safari for the iPhone. However, the Zimbra Standard client works perfectly. Additionally, the iPhone does not support sending attachments due to the lack of a file system browser. You can, however, view standard attachments such as .doc, .xls, and .pdf. If you receive an attachment which the iPhone cannot view, you can use Zimbra's "View as HTML" feature (Network Edition only).

To view the Zimbra Standard Client client directly from the iPhone, enter the URL http://mail.server.com/zimbra/h/ using Safari and replacing "mail.server.com" with your own domain.

Notification via SMS

You may wish for the Zimbra server to send you a text message when you receive a new e-mail.

  1. Click Options
  2. Choose Mail
  3. Check "Enable address for new mail notifications"
  4. Type your SMS address in e-mail format form. eg: number@txt.att.net
  5. Click Save

Now the server will text message you when you receive a new message. Text messaging rates may apply.
