Introduction

With Zimbra Collaboration Server, you can access all of your Zimbra Calendars using iCal or Calendar in the different OS X versions.

This guide shows you how to access your Zimbra Calendar using OS X and iCal or Calendar.

Before You Begin

This guide assumes that you are already running OS X and you have the iCal or Calendar applications installed.

To access your email, you must have the following information:

  • Your Zimbra email address and password.
  • Zimbra mail server FQDN. This is usually in the form of mail.domain.com.

Your system administrator will be able to give you this information if you do not already have it.

Viewing your Zimbra Calendar using iCal or Calendar

The following steps show you how to read and write in your Zimbra Calendar using iCal or Calendar in OS X.

To view your Zimbra Calendar using iCal or Calendar and CalDAV

The recommended way to connect your Zimbra Calendar and iCal is using CalDAV. You will synchronize with your Zimbra Server and be able to do all the typical Calendar actions:

  • Create appointments
  • Edit appointments created from the Web Client or another device
  • Delete appointments
  • Move appointments
  • Dismiss appointments
  • etc.

Zimbra Calendar and requirements

Since Zimbra Collaboration 6, you don't need to perform any additional steps or configuration in your server to connect calendars. You only need to know the Calendar name that you want to use in the CalDAV client. The final URL to use in the CalDAV client would be:

https://zimbra.example.com/dav/<USERNAME>/CalendarNAME

You can also add your credentials into the URL. Note that this includes your password, which may not be recommended.

https://<USERNAME>:<PASSWORD>@zimbrahost.example.com/dav/<USERNAME>/Calendar

For example, here you can see 3 different Calendars in the Zimbra Web Client:

iCal instructions

1. Search in Launchpad for the iCal application.

2. Click in the iCal or Calendar left-top menu and select Add Account:

3. Select the Add CalDav Account option, then click in Continue.

4. Select Manual in the Account Type, enter your email address in the User Name field, enter your password, and enter the Zimbra FQDN in the Server Address, after this click in Create

5. If you don't have a valid SSL Certificate, you will need to accept the SSL message warning.

6. After a few seconds you will be able to see all of your Zimbra Calendars as well as all of your appointments.

Shared Calendar in iCal or Calendar

You can also use all of Zimbra's sharing power with iCal or Calendar and CalDAV, for example: Imagine that a Department Leader wants to create a Calendar for each Technician, like in the next diagram:

Zimbra-calendar-ical-008.png

The Department Leader must create each Calendar and share with the Technicians, giving read-only or read-write permission.

1. In this example, the Department Leader creates a Calendar for Technician Bob: click the gear icon and select New Calendar

Zimbra-calendar-ical-009.png

2. Enter the Calendar name, in this case Technician Bob, then click OK

Zimbra-calendar-ical-010.png

3. Edit the new Calendar with right-click > Properties, and select Share Calendar.

4. In the email field, select Bob's email address, and select the role for Bob. Viewer is read-only or Manager is read-write, then click OK

Zimbra-calendar-ical-012.png

5. After a few seconds, Bob will receive an email with the invitation to the Calendar resource. Once accepted, the iCal or Calendar will sync the Shared Calendar:

Log trace when sync

When the appointments are pulled from the Zimbra Server to the CalDAV client, you will be able to see the next log traces in the /opt/zimbra/logs/mailbox.log. You can see that these came from OS X and iCal or Calendar:
